Top 5 Best (Minor) Feelings
If I made a “Best Feelings” list in general it would be filled with the obvious things like accepting Jesus, getting married, and having kids. Those are unarguable. But what about the little, day to day things? What are the small moments that give you a smile or put a little pep in your step?
5. Catching a yellow stoplight
This is near and dear to my heart. I’m a very impatient driver. I don’t drive to drive. I drive to get from point A to point B as fast as physically possible. Living in a capital city, there are an abundance of stoplights. Drive 10 seconds in any direction and you hit a light. To me, there is no better feeling while driving than seeing a green from a distance, worried about making it, getting closer and speeding up a little bit, and then the light turning yellow right when you get there. You do it! You made it through one more light without stopping. Until the next one…
4. Finding money hidden somewhere
Admittedly, I’m a bit of a tightwad financially. I don’t like the thought of buying something I don’t need. Correction, it pains me to buy something I may not need. I’d rather miss out on the opportunity than risk wasting my money. Which brings me to #4. There aren’t many feelings better than finding money in a drawer, pocket, or car. Here’s why; that money is now unaccounted for thus does not fall under the potential wasteful spending umbrella. It’s $10 I didn’t think I had. So by that I mean I can spend it on anything guilt free because it wasn’t something I ever thought I had. Financial freedom!
3. Getting picked first in any recreation sport
If you played sports in school, part of your identity remains in your athletic ability. Competition is in your blood. For example, last summer when the Price boys were reunited for a week, we had the following competitions: kicking different balls into a target net, dice games, how could hold their breath the longest, and who could do the most consecutive flips under water. That’s true by the way. Turns out if you flip 15 times under water it makes you so disoriented that you can’t find the surface. Two of us were designated lifeguards who would swim you to the top. No matter how much you age, the competitors never leaves you. So whether it’s pickup basketball or a golf game, getting picked first is an elite feeling.
2. Finding a good tv show
You’re either a tv show junkie or you have a life. And if you’re a tv show junkie like me, finding a great show is an incredibly exciting event. You don’t know how much I’d pay to go back and watch shows like The Office, Lost, or Survivor: Winners At War for the first time. Our inpatient brains have been trained to need a show that keeps you engaged from start to finish. When you find a new show that gets you to a couch weekly, you’ve got a great feeling.
1. Stumbling into a great conversation
Number 1 on my list is a specific interaction. This isn’t a Bible study or a counseling appointment. This is a random, unplanned conversation. Whether it’s running into someone at a coffee shop or an old friend calling you out of the blue, this is perhaps the most fulfilling feeling. As someone who slowly dies inside at the thought of small talk, this means even more to me. If we can talk about our top ten quarterbacks or our deepest fears I will leave that encounter with my tank filled. And you know that feeling. Walking away from a conversation with your tank filled to the top. There’s nothing like it.
