Top 5 Coolest Sounding State Names
I want to let you in on some inside information that my closest circle knows, but others usually don’t. My brain thinks of the silliest, most nonsensical, stuff. I make one comment a day that leaves someone scratching their head. Typically followed up by “how in the world did that get into your mind?”. The only explanation: Elite imagination.
My second Top 5 list is a representation of just that. Here is a list of the coolest sounding states, which I’m sure is something you were highly anticipating.
5. Florida - When I was a Freshman in high school a viral song came out: ‘Low’ by Flo-Rida. You may not remember the song but you definitely remember hearing people dancing to “Apple bottom jeans and the boots with the fur”. A few years later, I learned that Flo-Rida’s name came from splitting Florida in half. Blew my mind. Because of that, Florida cracks the top 5.
4. Utah - Short sweet and to the point. I’m pretty certain the name originated from a traveler asking a local infant child what this place was called. The child, who had a speech impediment, responded by saying “You tall”. The traveler, thinking the child said “Utah”, made that the official name of the state. Wow, that’s truly an incredible story. Utah falls just outside of the medal stand.
3. New York - If this was a creativity competition New York would be located slightly above New Mexico and below New Hampshire at number 49. However, it’s a cool competition. You have to admit that New York has a high coolness factor. The Yankees, Giants, Jets, and Knicks definitely play a part. Iconic NY logos. You can’t deny that any NY hat has an aura.
2. Montana - It’s really hard to say ‘Montana’ without including a cheesy cowboy accent. Montana literally means mountain. Who doesn’t love the mountains? If civilizations didn’t exist and you could just settle anywhere, Mawn-tan-uh would be a great option based on name alone. Trek the mountains and get in touch with your cowboy roots.
1. Rhode Island - If you were a foreigner and someone asked you where you’d want to go based on names, you’d probably pick Rhode Island. It has the sound of a luxury vacation resort or maybe a classy theme park. If it was “Road Island” it would rank outside the top ten. But the Rhode spelling gives it an elegance that can only be attributed to few states. Because of that, it earns the gold medal.
