Most of my life was wasted by comparing my situation to everyone else’s. After a lot of Bible reading, wise counsel, hard experiences, and simple maturing, I was finally able to utter a life-changing phrase: Life’s not fair, and that’s OK.

I used to wonder if God had a hand in the wins. Did he choose for my team to win those playoff games? At times it sure did seem like it. Then I settled on, there’s no way. Now, as a I look back and really think about it. I think so. Not because he wanted me to win. But because he knew that there was a much bigger plan for me. It was going to be bringing a message of salvation to coaches across the country. Do you know what’s helpful for that? Influence. And being successful definitely helps your influence. I’m not sure anyone would listen to me if I was a terrible coach. So is it possible God was creating favor for the future interactions I’d have? Definitely, I believe so.

I’ve worked with teens going on 10 years now. A major passion of mine is bridging the generational gap between the younger and older generations. There are differences in preferences, lifestyles, and hobbies. One thing stands true in almost any generational tension, misunderstanding. We’ve all heard it. Younger people saying the older people are stubborn and over-critical. Older people saying the younger people are lazy and sensitive. The issue is that these people are simply not doing two important things.

I get asked a lot by younger coaches what they should do to “break in” to the industry. My answer every time is that they need to start building connections. Coaches at any level who are emerging into the field should focus on this immediately.

Coaching is really hard. That’s not to discourage you, as hard can be fun. Just like anything in life, the output can’t be greater than the input. Before you get into the job you need to know what you’re in for. There are “have-tos” and then there are “get-tos”. If you’re on the side of “get-tos” then you’re off to a good start.
